An experimental hybrid drawing lab

This participatory and collaborative Lab is based on sensory drawing. The material conditions will be set up for you: arrive, participate and draw. The conditions are arranged to destabilise the visual and bring it into a more equal footing with touch, sound, movement and other senses.

 Pulling from the Well

Pulling from the Well is a drawing workshop that invites participants to reconsider drawing not as a tool for recording what is seen, but as an embodied and exploratory process through which understanding may emerge.

The title and premise derive from an idea articulated by Alyson Brien, former Fine Art lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, who described drawing as akin to drawing water from a well: an act of seeking through which one might come to know something more deeply, while also being refreshed and enlivened by the experience itself.

Rather than striving for accuracy or representation, participants will be encouraged to respond sensorially to what is perceived, remembered, imagined, or felt. Drawing becomes a mode of enquiry: a way of thinking through the body and attending to experience.

Using carbon paper, participants will generate marks that remain unseen until revealed. By interrupting habits of correction and self-editing, the workshop invites drawing as a direct form of articulation, less an act of transcription and more an encounter.

While participants will initially work individually, the workshop remains open to exchange and collaboration, with drawings combining to create larger, shared surfaces of enquiry and discovery.

What to expect

• Meet in UG floor of LSA 9:50am

• Floor based workshop so come in comfortable   clothing and be prepared that these may pick up some graphite and carbon.

• Sensory, process-led drawing

• Participatory and collaborative

• Prompts moving between live and online participants

• Materials included in the ticket contribution but feel free to bring your own mark making tools.

 Hybrid participation

The Lab will include 10-12 in-room participants and an online group. Online participants will watch and relay prompts into the sensory drawing session, creating a live exchange between room and screen. The activity will be filmed using a GoPro, positioned to witness the drawing rather than capture close-up detail, so the process can feed our shared inquiry.

Who is it for? Artists, researchers, educators and anyone interested in experimental drawing practice and shared inquiry.

DRA|W opens drawing conversations and labs. We set drawing queries in motion across live, online and satellite spaces. We support experimental drawing practice through collaboration, dialogue and shared inquiry.
